United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP): Internship Programme

The objectives of the internship programme are: - To provide current students with important practical experience which complements their field of study, which at the same time will be of benefit to the UN offices to which the intern is assigned. - To promote among the students a better understanding of major global problems confronting the world and to give them an insight into how the UN attempts to find solutions to these problems. - To expose the students to the UN and its policies and programmes and have them become ambassadors of good will. - To enable students from all parts of the world to exchange information during and after the internship so as to appreciate cultural diversity amongst different peoples and have them become ambassadors of peace and good will. Offices are located in Nairobi, assignments involving on-site visits or field work in Nairobi or elsewhere are very rare. Interns are normally assigned work that is desk-based and may include, but not limited to: * Project formulation, monitoring and/or evaluation. * Research and preparation of papers/reports. * Preparing work for and participation in intergovernmental meetings. * Webpage/Database design and maintenance. * Fund-raising. * Liaison with partners The work interns perform during their stay will depend on the needs of the office to which they are assigned, their qualifications and interests. If you have specific interests or requirements for your university course, you should indicate this on the application form. Most interns work on a project or several projects which will benefit both them and the offices to which they are attached, such as limited research, creation or improvement of databases and/or web sites, public relations, liaison with partners, public relations e.t.c. Before applying for internships, candidates are advised to visit the websites of the various divisions of interest in order to have an overview of what activities they deal with and if they are related to the degree courses they are studying. Placements take place in the following departments: 1. Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA) 2. Division of Communications and Public Information 3. Division of Environmental Conventions 4. Division of Environmental Policy Implementation 5. Division of Global Environment Facility Coordination 6. Division of Policy Development and Law 7. Division of Regional Cooperation 8. Division of Technology, Industry and Economics
